Language Acquisition through Motor Planning (LAMP) is a therapeutic approach based on neurological and motor learning principals. The goal is for individuals who are nonverbal or have limited verbal communication to be able to communicate with the world around them using a robust communication system. Everyone has the right to say what they want to say, when they want to say it! The LAMP methodology helps teach individuals to use an Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC) device. AAC is anything that is not verbal speech: gestures, Sign Language, writing, or drawing to express what they want to communicate. The LAMP method accepts all forms of communication with a focus on teaching how to use a speech generating device through sensory rich activities. She primarily uses Music Therapy to help teach skills, but can also use an individual’s most motivating activities to help them learn to communicate. Shelley offers individual sessions with parent consultation as a package. It is important that parents are modeling the device at home and in the community to establish that the device can be used in all areas of the individual’s life.
